Homemade Cornbread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (150g) cornmeal
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar (optional, for a sweeter cornbread)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (or substitute: 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup (60ml) melted butter or vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing the skillet or baking pan)
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place a cast-iron skillet (or an 8×8-inch baking dish) in the oven to heat while you prepare the batter. - Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar (if using), baking powder, baking soda, and salt. - Prepare Wet Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk and eggs together. Slowly whisk in the melted butter or vegetable oil. - Combine Ingredients:
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing; the batter should be slightly lumpy. - Heat the Skillet:
Carefully remove the skillet from the oven and add the 2 tablespoons of butter, swirling to coat the bottom and sides. - Bake the Cornbread:
Pour the batter into the hot, greased skillet. Spread it evenly with a spatula. Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. - Cool and Serve:
Let the cornbread cool for about 5 minutes in the skillet. Slice into wedges or squares and serve warm with butter, honey, or your favorite spread.
